INSTRUCTIONS TO NADIA: THE SECRET OF BLUE WATER (NES)
Nadia is played much like chess. Whoever killed the "Queen" first was the winner. However, in the same paragraph I'll mention that Nadia's not much like chess at all, but more like a strategy game (not to say that chess isn't a strategy game). If I've got everybody confused, I'll explain. You and your opponent each have a different team of guys. Each of your guys is different, and each of the opponents' guys are different than yours. Each character moves differently and has different skills, which are actually magic attacks. Every time you attack somebody it will take off HP and not just kill them like in chess. Some people have magic skills to to heal themselves, and some just have magic to attack the opponent at long range. Every once in a while an icon appears on the battle field. This is an item. If you collect this item, you can do many things like heal or attack the enemy, which really helps you out, and adds another RPG element to the mix. And if you're not into bashing the computer, a two player mode is added as well.
The graphics aren't bad, but they're not spectacular either. The characters look very simplistic, and not at all like their anime counterparts. The music gets annoying quickly, so you might want to mute. However, graphics and sound usually aren't that important to a strategy game.
If you want a different gaming experience, Nadia will probably fit the bill. If you're into strategy, Nadia's a great gaming experience. If you're an import junkie, Nadia will be a fine addition to your library. If not, then maybe you should stay away from this one. Not knowing Japanese really makes the game hard to understand, and hurts gameplay a bit. But play around with it for a while and you'll figure it out. It's one of the better imports.
