PAST (From birth to 1889)

Whow! A new dress for my Barbie !!

Oh, I remember it all... Back when everybody used to call me ``Miss.''
I was the only daughter of an aristocrat in the Gran family, who owned a huge iron mine.
I was the most important\nthing in the world to him.
Mother had a weak constitution, and died when I was young.

All I had left of her were good memories and the jewels she left me.  After that, I became my father's reason for living. He treated me very well.

One wonderful day followed another.

And I grew up.

Err...Daddy, wasn't it a dress for my Barbie??And on the night of my first party, on my sixteenth birthday...

 ...I met a man.

He was nobility. He had status and breeding. We fell in love right away... And, against my father's objections, got engaged.

 Papa was right.

He was quite the con artist. {tonda pettenshi}. All that about him being nobility was a lie.
He was only after me to get to my father's fortune. My father became his creditor and had to pay off that con-artist's debts. Soon after that, not only was I betrayed by my first love, I lost my home.

Daddy: "NO!" I was abandoned by everyone who used to take such good care of me. The only ones who stayed were my driver, Sanson, and my engineer, Hanson. Them, and the jewels my mother left me.  In the end, it was Mama's jewels that saved us. I turned their beauty into money.  I really appreciated those jewels. They didn't betray me.  That was when I decided that I would live only for jewels. That I'd try to grab all the jewels in the world.
(Taken from Episode 12)

The following dialogue is taken instead from Episode 33:

GRANDIS: SHOOT!
NADIA: What's the matter?
GRANDIS: Oh, I remembered something...
NADIA: That man, right?
GRANDIS: I must be the unluckiest woman in the world to meet that man in this kind of place.
GRANDIS: That jerk came to Africa with two women and is acting like a little thief.
NADIA: Love multiplies hatred hundredfold.
GRANDIS: Me? Love Gonzales?
NADIA: I figured out female psychology. It is like this warm water, I think.
NADIA: Sometimes it is cold and other times it is so hot.
NADIA: It always flows downward and ends up with the man who is waiting for me.

PRESENT (1889-1890)

Oh well...we all know what happened in those years...don't we? JJ

FUTURE (1893-1902)

We know something about her in future (1902) thanks to Marie, at the end of the series...

Marie: It looks like Grandis is still having fun, galavanting around on her own. I guess she just keeps on looking for love.

...But we also know what also happened in 1893 thanks to Fuzzy's story...Though I guess you agree with me when I say that idea of an "evil Grandis" again, after that really strong friendship with Nadia & Jean, is awful ! They totally destroyed a 39-episodes long positive psychological development !!

Psychology

Grandis's psychology is quite simple to explain. Her childhood experiences determine most of her present & future actions...Let's see...

PAST:
She had a quite complex childhood: she lived for 15 years in a rich family and it seems her mother's death didn't hurt her so much (was she too young?). It was a fantastic life till...the meeting with her first love, Gonzales, who cheated her. At that point, Grandis fell in a sort of depression: not only she was betrayed by her first love, she also lost her home, friends and was abandoned by everyone who used to take such good care of her.

That's why she decided to become "evil": it's quite a revenge, a PERSONAL revenge, guided by a sort of selfishness, against people who have what she misses now. Only three things are important: Sanson & Hanson (the only ones who didn't left her alone) + jewels.

PRESENT:
"That was when I decided that I would live only for jewels. That I'd try to grab all the jewels in the world". This way of feeling stops after her first meeting with Captain Nemo: I don't know why, maybe 'cos he seems to ignore her or 'cos she understands Electra loves him too (quite a challange, uh?), anyway she falls in love again, forgetting everthing, including the Blue Water. At this point she becomes a friend of Jean & Nadia but that's not a totally direct consequence I guess. If she" forgets" the Blue Water only when she meets Nemo, why didn't she try to steal it from Jean when they're leaving from Gargoyle's island inside the Gratan??

FUTURE:
The epilogue shows Grandis playing in a golf field with a lot of people around her. In XIX century this sport was an exclusive of rich people so I guess she's not in search of money or jewels anymore. If so, supposing money is not a problem now, she probabily tries to search for another man who'll make her happy...Difficult...quite difficult, don't you think? J

Notes:

According to the 90% of the sites I ever visited (including mine J), Grandis is Italian...In fact, as far as I know her Spanish origin is just mentioned here and there but there's no real clue about that. Also once I read her family was from Genova (Italy)...I don't know where that guy has taken this info anyway J ...though it's absolutely possible: in XIX century, North Italy (where Genova is) was far richer than the rest of the country and Grandis mentioned a "rich family" and a "huge iron mine"...

But I wondered about another possible clue of her Italian origin: telling Nadia something about her past, she reminds scenes from a ball, when she was 16, which could be the "débutantes'ball" . I don't know if it exists in foreign countries too but here is quite a famous thing...at least in the past...

Otherwise, there's the "senorita" factor...I mean the fact that Jean, Nadia and then Nemo call Grandis in a "Spanish" way. BUT, talking about Nadia&Jean, it's an insignificant element, supposing they couldn't know anything about her past in Ep3, right? While, about Nemo, you surely noticed what I wrote in my "Nadia & Reality" section, talking about Thartessos possible Spanish origin...Maybe Anno knew about it and...

Anyway, if you still don't believe she's Italian, here's the final clue...
Here's what Gonzeles says in Ep33...

GONZALES: Oh, long time no see.  You are, if I remember correctly, Grandis
Granbar or something from Italy.
